Swedish Massage

This form of massage is said to have been invented in the mid-to-late 1800s by a Dutch physician named Johann George Mezger. He specialized in physical therapy and was a professional gymnastics instructor. Through the course of his studies he started practicing “friction methods” on his patients, which eventually formed the base of what know today as Swedish Massage.

As one of the most common and widespread forms of massage, Swedish massage focuses on the relaxation of superficial muscles, and increasing blood circulation by using light, gentle strokes.

There are five principal techniques used in Swedish massage.

  • – Friction: The use of firm, circular motions with the fingers, palms, and forearms.
  • – Vibration: Rhythmic shaking of the massaged area helps the body relax and loosen up. This technique aids in soothing nerves, especially in areas with knots or large scars.
  • – Effleurage: Uses long gentle and gliding strokes to stimulate the body, with varying degrees of pressure.
  • – Petrissage: A kneading movement is applied to the muscles using the thumb or fingers. It may include the wringing, rolling, and/or lifting of the tissues.
  • – Tapotement: Rhythmic tapping, drumming, hammering, and slapping are used, which helps with relaxation and draining of the lymphatic system, and promotes endorphin production.

Swedish massage may provide benefits for blood circulation, relaxation, improving physical well-being, back pain, increasing flexibility and mobility, headaches, chronic joint and muscle pain, depression, stress, anxiety, boosting immunity, lymph drainage, nerve stimulation, diabetes, asthma, enhance mood, improve sleep, and feeling rejuvenated.
